daddy’s home

***trigger warning***

She’d seen that look in his eyes before. The ice that met her at the door so many times. Gliding gingerly across the floor to avoid crushing the eggshells beneath her feet, she quietly hushes the children into another room. daddy’s home.

He raises his voice in lieu of raising his hand, unavoidably raising her pressure. Scolding ensues and she’s painfully reminded that her hair, housekeeping skills and cooking pale in comparison to her predecessors. His wings of fury bristle against her as he stomps toward the den and again…she freezes. daddy’s home.

Heart hardened and teeth clenched she paces the floor weary…worried. Serenaded by Nina, also a Little Girl Blue, she wonders how much longer she can be glared at but never seen, when daddy’s home.

Too shaken to speak aloud, her journal shrouds her evening prayer, pen in trembling hand, she writes…

Dear God,

Tonight I want to intercede
For those perhaps worse off than me
All of my problems you’ve heard before
I humbly ask that you listen once more

For every slammed door, tear stained pillow and discovered infidelity…
For every troubled marriage, bowed down head and frightened child…
For every muffled cry, stifled hope and shattered dream…
For every dreaded footstep outside the bedroom door, lunch room taunting and bus ride…
For every lonely, suicidal and depressed one…
For every disconnected utility, empty fridge and financial strain…
For every eviction, car repossession and foreclosure…
For every denied application, overlooked resume and failed test…
For every letter of rejection and business venture gone awry…
For every broken heart, guilt ridden mind and grief stricken soul…
For every child gone missing, the parent that waits as interest in the case fades…
For every false accusation, imprisoned innocent and unjust cause…
For every depleted fund, empty nest and barren womb…
For every medical diagnosis, flashback and anxiety…
For every memory lost, tormented mind and voiceless voice…

P l e a s e…comfort, heal and protect
I believe You can make it alright
Give HOPE to everyone in need…
Be
Daddy
in
the
home

tonight
