“My name is Jessica Saunders, everything Libra, financial educator and author.

I’m from Toronto, Ontario, and raised by women.”

e speaks…

And that’s when my world expanded into something even more beautiful. I began to scroll through Jessica’s Instagram timeline and found myself laced throughout her pieces. She encompasses power, ingenuity and all things woman. And her words…her words stir the reader to do the same.

I think my favorite take away from Jessica’s style of writing is that she gives you permission to feel. There are some pieces that resonated with me more than others; though I wish they hadn’t. #MeToo is more than a hashtag or millennial movement. My ability to relate should only be considered a gentle nod to a fellow survivor. For I think it is an extreme disservice to claim complete identification with anyone’s unfortunate happenstance. As much as we are different we are the same. As much as we are the same we are intricately different…and there is strength in that.

More than anything; it is a fine line that must be honored.

I honor you Jessica Saunders and every Jessica Saunders that has yet to find her voice.

Recommended by an extremely supportive and seasoned poet in the Instagram Writing community, Cheryl Schilling; I couldn’t wait to learn more about Jessica!

Jessica speaks…

My book Second Chances, is a piece of me within each page. It’s a novel based on a journey of a sexual assault, vile romance, romance, heart break, need of self-love, fighting depression and anxiety. Courage of self-determination and development as a woman to grow and become a better person for oneself.

Three part series to come.

This book leads into Love Notes, which describes a real romantic relationship of complex and raw, passionate love in various areas.

e speaks…

I can really hear your heart in your description of Second Chances. What gave you the courage to write your book and see it through to completion?

Jessica speaks…

When writing my book Second Chances, I must say, I fell through the cracks of courage more than once. Truly, what helped me see it through completion was the chance to reach out to people, let them know through all various aspects of life no matter what happens, they’re not alone.

Women, like men, keep a lot to themselves and keep secrets from even their closest friends and loved ones. This book takes you from what women feel are their possible lowest ends and let’s you see through a possibility of a new life. Give others courage to stand up for themselves and face society on multiple levels.

e speaks…

Is there a brief excerpt that resonates with you and why?

Jessica speaks…

My life is on these pages but if I had to pick one excerpt it would be page 267, “My entire life all I’ve heard is, to stay pretty and remind strong. As if women like me weren’t supposed to read books and conquer mountains.”.

This piece has always been one of my favorites because I find unwavering truth behind the words women hear daily. Women, still fight for their rights to be identified as intelligent and self-sufficient without a partner. Our body image and partner is irrelevant to our capabilities and I hope women will seek their innermost desires and achieve their goals and dreams.

e speaks…

I love the idea of a three part series for the novel! Any advice for new writers on how to know when to consider a series in lieu of “saying it all in one breath”?

Jessica speaks…

If I could speak out to any writers, I would tell them I cannot give you the best advice as I am still improving and growing. There is no right or wrong way and if you have a passion or a story you believe someone should know, put it out there and don’t give up on it!

When I’m into a book. It goes everywhere with me. I intentionally pace myself when arrested by strong lines and reading Sips of Poetry with KI was no different.

Ki (pronounced Kai) considers herself an introvert whose voice speaks volumes through her pen. I came across her work as a fellow writer in Instagram’s writing community. She was always very different. Her kindness and sincerity was apparent on every post and with every comment. It was as though she too, cared more about the person behind the post than product of the pen itself.

A woman who deeply loves family, she even shares creative space with her brother in Sips of Poetry with KI.

Often referencing the sweet and at times sour intricacies of romantic relationships, the book takes a turn as she shares a very personal and powerful moment with her readers:

I felt honored to hold this book. It felt like a labor of love and the first of many to come. You too can hold this in your hands and catch the heartbeat of this beautiful soul. For purchase inquiries: Visit her on Instagram @waves_of_rae or email kileo@bourbonwhiskeyandink.com.

I first introduced Emmanuella Raphaelle to this space over a year ago during my 2017 #WriterCrushWednesday series. Much of what I shared at that time, such as my admiration and respect, has only increased after reading her first book: After The Affair – Re Membering.

I don’t remember finishing a book and immediately flipping to the front cover to begin reading it again. It’s. That. Good.

An autobiography. Truth encapsulated. A lover of words and master chef in serving them well. This memoir has fed me and yet I wanted more.

When I first met Celestial, as I often call her; I discerned a weight that could not be denied. She garnered a depth that casual glances could not pinpoint or ignore. Reading her work always felt inviting; as though I had stumbled across a flowing discourse midstream that I was welcome to dance in. However laced throughout the 388 pages of robust writing is a story that deserves to be felt over and over and over again.

It’s my favorite kind of writing. Raw. Honest. A gift. Published by a publishing company Emmanuella created to house this first fortune of many to come. Do get it. Do read it. Do get it when you read it.

Oh and be blessed…’cause I was.

Super excited about this #WriterCrushWednesday featured poet! Unlike most of the writers featured I did not meet this poet via Instagram’s thriving Writing Community.

I can’t really say how I learned of his work. I’m guessing the occasional “scroll, skip, skip, scroll” method of discovery served me well the moment I landed in his world here on WordPress.

Surely this is not a teenager writing with this much depth, I thought. Mesmerized by his gift, I instantly became a fan. Devereaux Frazier is a genius. Yep. A genius. After all that’s how I chose to rationalize the indelible impression he had made.

Scroll, click, click, scroll.

Um wait there’s more? More than a genius? Oh. A genius who had recently learned that he was autistic.

He Speaks…

I Have Aspergers, And I Hate Myself Most Of The Time

So, where did we leave off

My eyes always drift

to the edges of the room

which is probably why everything

always seems to end so soon

Oops, I guess I forgot to say

that I have Aspergers

so I really don’t understand your way

I’m on the autism spectrum

and I hate myself most of the time

I hate having no intuition

and struggling around my peers

While others are deep in conversation

I sit in a corner, trapped by lumbering fears

I hate not looking into your eyes

and as you wonder what’s wrong with me

I wonder why

I hate being the last to speak, the last to be heard

because I hate the crowd, and stray from the herd

to the edges of the fields to think

I hate being so obscene in the wake of surprise

awakening a manic rage

and other times, I cry

But over it all

I hate how helpless I feel

being so unable to control my emotions

and my motions

drive people away

Tap

tap

tap

I hear what you say

but don’t hear what you mean

Tap

tap

tap

I hear what you say

but is it what it seems

What is a birthday suit

Why did he can a human being

I seem stupid and clueless

helpless and hopeless

weak and weary

and at times I’m all of those

and none

at the same time

e Speaks….

Devereaux challenges me as a writer all while invoking motivation to be a better human at the same time. He teaches me and I find myself learning in a space that feels safe and non intrusive for both of us. There are poets and then there are anomalies who embody poetry. Devereaux Frazier is the latter.

He Speaks…

Share a little about yourself:

Guess I can start off by saying I’m Devereaux Frazier. I’m 18 and a student at the Community College of Baltimore County. Just finished my first semester there, actually. I’ve been writing since I was 13, and while major publication has evaded me (for now), I’ve filled the time being published by Teen Ink magazine, Literary Arts Review, and SpillWords while being a member of Blood Into Ink and a guest barista at Go Dog Go Cafe, two exemplary literary collectives. At the forefront of my writing presence is my own blog, An Aspergian’s Chemical Romance. I stared writing for it two years ago with the intention of just having a place to write and talk about my life on the autism spectrum. What it’s become is a place where I dive deeper into my condition, really challenging the “why’s” of my actions rather than stating (rather boringly I think, though no disrespect to those who do) my symptoms and how my life fits around them. I never wanted to be another WordPress diary. My poetry is less about the aspergers itself, and more about recognizing the beauty that it creates. People seldom understand me, and so rather than giving them boring anecdotes and medical diagnoses, I turn to poetry to paint pictures of my existence.

e shares one of her favorite pieces…

The ABC’s of me

Autistic, because where else to begin

Broken from the people who discouraged me

Cunning developed from outwitting them

Dark lines brooding in irritated waters

Eventually becoming open to your company

Forever hating and loving it

Gone before you ever said goodbye

Headed to the outside of your inside

Incorrect politically because I like action

Juxtaposed is male strength

Kissed with emotion fragility

Lined inside a boy turned man still child

Made to write, man of words never enough

Not only written or spoken, but merely dreamt

Outstretched hands for a woman’s grasp

Perfectly aware of their unawares to my truth

Questioning why I just don’t tell them

Resting assured that they already know

Still afraid of what the future has for me

Testing my boundaries every day

Understanding growth is ugly and beautiful

Voicing my concerns with maturity

Warring to find the source of my strength

Xylophones were hated in youth

Zenith not nearly reached

How/when did you discover your voice as a writer and what inspires you to write?

I think it was about 5 years ago, at a Stevenson University creative writing camp. I’d never seriously considered a writing career beforehand, but when I came there and the subsequent year in 2014 I was shocked to discover not just how much I loved it, but how good I really was. (Or at least felt. I could post some of my old poems. Yuck. I really hate thinking about those) I think most things inspire me to write. I’m pretty observant, so I notice a lot of things, but rather than actual objects, I think emotions inspire me most. I like writing from regret and possibility.

Had you planned to ever share your story of living with Asperger’s or were you encouraged to do so?

I never planned to share my story. I mean, as a writer I knew it would eventually become a focal point, but when I started writing people started asking questions.

What makes your heart smile?

What makes my heart smile? This is such a beautiful question…Life. You never know when your time is up…my mom and sister. My mom is best person I know. She’s everything really, and I wouldn’t know what to do without her. My sister is much of the same, albeit younger and with less wisdom but sharing the same desire and passion for truth and right carried out. Juana is an incredible boss and somebody I can trust. Mary and I share a great passion for football, and we still share barbs about how good (or bad) Andy Reid actually is. Shoutout to my bro Ryan too. He got me into airsoft. Feedback from my writing. And anything written by Kindra Austin.

How has your transition to college life been?

College life…hm. I’m not actually “involved” much in it. I’m kinda like go there, do my assignments, go home. I’ll integrate more overtime, but as of now I’m just trying to get a feel for professors and becoming comfortable with coursework.

Where do you see yourself a year from today?

Year from today? Published. Paperback book. Doing book signings and author meet and greets. Going to New York. Going on live TV for interviews. Just telling the world a perspective that enough haven’t heard. Straight A’s. A girlfriend would also be great 😂😂😂.

He Speaks…

The Magic, The Misery

The magic

The misery

Of falling someone

Never meant to be

With you

For you

Forever you wonder

Why the universe hates you

All I’m asking for is one

Just one chance being loved

By somebody special

Somebody true

One to write me and you

In the bark of our long-lived tree

And in the kisses blown

Upon warm summer breeze

Seeing everyone else with somebody

Reminds me how I’m nobody

And knowing I won’t ever

Even though I try

Is the worst part of all

What do you want your legacy to be?

My legacy? A male from my family who really stood out from the crowd. Redeemed some of the things that have plagued our family. Finally made enough to let my mom stop working. Let the world know what life with Aspergers and autism is really like.

Sooo…

Since today is also #ThrowbackThursday I decided to share one of my vintage pieces entitled Haunted for Day 1.

HAUNTED

Written by Ericka Arthur – June 2016

There are moments when I’m angry.

Days when I don’t want to speak in code smeared in morse nor shielded by prose.

The air thick with quiet.

Forcing me to relive pain behind doors now closed.

Smothered by every flashback of you not having my back.

Haunted about lies shrouded in wasted times.

Taunted by my high road refusal to drop dimes.

Shamed and gag ordered by my response to pain.

‘Cause now there’s another that can drop my name.

Hello & welcome new faces!

I wanted to take a moment to thank my faithful Authenticitee Speaks blog supporters who ask about my poetry all the time! You are beyond awesome. Yes, I still write love poetry, quite a bit actually. However in the past year I’ve ventured outside my comfort zone to share my work in other spaces, including other blogs such as For Friends Without BordersMost of my poetry however, appeared on Instagram (@authenticiteespeaks) prior to my recent decision to gradually streamline the content by deleting over 250 posts in the last 2-3 months.

There is an AMAZING, rich mosaic of gifted writers on Instagram and I’ve been blessed to connect with many a humble, gifted and loyal soul there. I have even featured a few right here on my blog! Just go to the Menu and then click the Instagram Writer Crush Series link to meet a few!

Even if you are not on Instagram, simply Google #PoetsOfInstagram and you can check out a myriad of poems/quotes from writers all over the world that way too!

Ah! In other news…

Earlier this year, I had the honor of being published for the first time as a contributing poet in Feminine Collective‘s book; ‘Love Notes From Humanity: The Lust, Love & Loss Collection available on Amazon! What made that moment all the more special to/for me; was that part of the proceeds went to Suicide Prevention. I cried tears of joy because that’s where my heart lies. What a blessing!!! I’m forever grateful to Publisher and Editor in Chief; Julie Anderson and her staff for seeing something special in my work. I don’t take being considered and then featured lightly!

So as I recondition myself to sharing the bulk of my poetry on my own blog again (imagine that🤔), I look forward to hearing from old and new supporters & fellow bloggers alike! Introduce yourself if we’ve not met, tell me a tad bit about yourself and next time maybe even bring a friend!

Stay tuned for the Poetry Archives Series launch! Super excited about that. Oh and if you’ve yet to hear my new Inspiration With E radio show, all Season I Episodes are available on demand right here on Authenticitee Speaks!

Thank you for your support! Please feel free to comment, like on Facebook and share!

Alas! The #WriterCrushSeries‘ final bow has drawn nigh! Every time I tried to write my intro for this last poet, I got a wee bit verklempt. I honestly tried to make it as concise as possible but there was really no way to skirt around a few details as to why this feature was different. See not only is this an exclusive (no really, he fought me tooth and nail); I had never collaborated with another poet until he invited me to do so over a year ago! Something pretty dope was birthed in both of us on Feb. 6, 2016 and our IG Poetry connection has never been the same.

Though we’ve never spoken in person and we have no idea even which state each other lives in (true story), every formality has since been tossed out the window LOL! Even our kids know him by one of his many names, ‘Mr. Lyrical’!

A great Dad to beautiful daughters, he and I look out for each other. We genuinely support each other’s work, cheer the loudest for each other when collaborating with other poets, pray for each other’s families and get on each other’s nerves! LOL!!

Ah…But when we write…our art prevails and we write like lovers who have experienced the highest of highs and lowest of lows. In short, you never forget your first.

Ladies & Gentleman…meet my Lab Partner… (Poem in full beneath photo)

Can’t turn a you know what, to a house wife/Can’t teach an old dog new tricks heard that all my life/Know what you’re getting into before things go too far/Know how to walk away, keep peace and not go to war/How many one night stands, lead to true romance/Don’t know his or her past, but yet take a chance/So many sick of love, so many love sick/Too many baby daddies pray the next one a good pick/Still in and out of clubs and over 30/What’s wrong with this picture go ahead and ask somebody/Life alone can be miserable/So it’s good to find someone compatible/Open up your eyes before it’s too late/Love has no boundaries, it doesn’t discriminate/

What you know about faithfulness/Is that one of the ingredients to happiness/What you know about giving your heart/Are you willing to give your all or just a small part/What you know about the word trust/Between the tr and t is us/What you know about sacrifice/Deeds done from the heart doesn’t have a price/

Our first piece…

He speaks…

Son of a preacher birthed from an angel/My circle so small I hope you get the angle/I’ve been singing since I came out my mother’s womb/Don’t be surprised if you hear me even from my tomb/Silently I write so that my voice projects/My thoughts my mind and heart among sacred objects/That spew these words since the age of twelve/A disciple walking with Christ do you dare to delve/Into this dark and well lit place inside of me/A friend amongst strangers am I what you thought or imagined I’d be/

He shares…(Poem in full beneath photo)

She moved on, but it’s like I’m in quicksand/It’d kill me again to see her out with another man/I can’t handle the pain, do I pick up a bottle/Do I smoke it away and get higher than a space shuttle/Do I pop pills and pray I don’t see tomorrow/Do I cut my wrist and bleed out the pain and sorrow/Do I play Russian roulette and pull the trigger/Do I jump off a bridge as if I had wings go figure/Do I tie a rope around my neck and let my body hang/Do I be a snake charmer and hope I get bitten by a cobra’s fangs/Do I pretend that I’m ok, my body frozen, but my heart melting away/Saying I’m not missing you would be a lie/Not having you has me waking up each day hoping to die/

Let it bleed…🔫🔪💣💉💊🚬

I choose favorites…

Then we write again…and again…

I asked him if he had a favorite piece of ours but his answer is always the same..he doesn’t.

But I have one. It’s called ‘I Miss You…’ and we wrote from our guts as always…

I MISS YOU

I’m missing you in waves

Drowning in love lost so deep

I still swirl the taste of you

Around in my mind

Savoring you like an apéritif

And I don’t even drink

What you are made of

Is such a rare breed

It’s like nothing I’ve ever tasted

Experienced or seen

I understand why

you’re no longer here

We both know that it’s best

But knowing why I’m feigning

Does not make

my heart ache any less

@authenticiteespeaks

I’m missing you like air, it’s like I’m on a planet uninhabitable/

Dying to breathe you in, but truth is me living is the furthest thing from inevitable/

I’ve injected you inside me and I need another dose/

Tried generic versions, but compared to your authenticity nothing comes close/

You’re fire under water, cut from a cloth no longer made/

The queen on a chess board and in a deck of cards the ace of spade/We both know why you went your way and I’ve gone mine/

I’m praying you’ll come back to me, hoping you pick up on my subliminal signs/

Her catalog is extensive and its every bit majestic. All of it. Every presentation aesthetically appealing and her pen is simply fire. An admirer from the onset, I was not only impressed with Marie’s work, I was genuinely inspired by it. Bold and beyond creative; I found her Instagram page warm, inviting and brimming with excellence…so I stayed. Ever evolving as her Instagram name, she always keeps me coming back for more. I guess the secret is out now eh? Yep. I’m a fan.

She speaks…

I was an only child living in a small remote town in the Philippines and we didn’t have cable, that was how I got into writing. It was when I chanced upon my parent’s love letters that got me into writing poetry. I’ve changed usernames several times, starting with painfully.sweet, sweetandsordid, 4amreveries, raanimarie, madnesswithbitsofmagic, and the most recent (I feel good about this *wink*) – thenotionoflove. I am a hopeless romantic so I write a lot of mushy, clingy, fiery, steamy pieces. I’ve always had trouble sleeping so writing is one of the ways I relax and release the day’s stresses. I’ve met a lot of wonderful people through Instagram. Knowing that my words resonate and touch other people’s lives inspires me to continue writing.

And of course it was difficult to choose favorites…so I kept choosing…

Ilona ( pronounced “Ee-loh-nuh”) is by far one of the most thoughtful people in our Instagram Poet community. She makes sure we remain a cyber family by looking out for the poet behind each poem. Be it health issues, life changes or an extended absence; Ilona reaches out to everyone. In addition to being considerate, she has the nerve to be one heck of a writer. Actually…she’s pretty darn amazing.

She speaks…

I was born in Philadelphia. My parents were teachers and an odd interracial couple, in the midst of the late 60s and early 70s. My mother, a third generation Japanese American that was a toddler when put in the internment camps in Arizona during WWII and my father, a Hungarian- Gypsy immigrant, who escaped Russia’s invasion of Budapest at 14 years old. My mom taught world cultures and was very creative. My father was an instrumental music teacher and strolling violinist, on the side.

I wrote my first poem at 6 and by 8 was writing lyrics for my dad. I was surrounded by books with an extensive library, even from a very young age. Mostly, folklore, mythology and Fairytales from around the world, because my mom loved them.

I have always loved words. Totally and completely. I’m the geeky girl that loves her dictionary app the most on her phone. Got caught under the covers, with a flashlight reading until 3 – 4 in the morning. I wrote everyday when I was young. Short stories, poems, lyrics…eventually, I, also, discovered painting and sculpture. And went on to get a degree in Fine Arts with a minor in storytelling and mythology.

But eventually life happened. During a long and life draining 20 year marriage/relationship. I stopped writing, stopped creating…for 19 years…nothing. When he left me, suddenly, on Christmas day for another woman…with a 3 line note on a 5 x7 card. My world changed forever.

I began to journal and then, write poetry, to handle the ensuing PTSD and depression, as well as my exacerbated bipolar disorder. Over a year later, I changed my IG (Instagram) to mainly a poetry page. I wanted to express my journey to a new life. I, honestly, never thought anyone else would read my work. But I discovered a world of supportive and creative people that understood me, in ways no one else had.

I try to get naked with my words. I write about everything…stories, my loves, my pain, my changing mind, erotic desires, nature, and healing. It is the one way I reveal myself to myself. And scream out all the things I cannot process in my head.

I am so grateful for this path. For the wonderful community, I’m now a part of here. It has been a powerful part of my healing.

FullSizeRender(10)I have been blessed to see different facets of her poetry unfold. There is a sincerity laced within her persona that finds its way into her writing. Even the pieces which speak of yearning and unrequited love are gentle. Inviting. Believable. Relatable.

In her own words…

If you were to ask Celine to describe herself, she would tell you that she’s just a simple girl “WITH NOTHING MUCH TO TELL”. But ask her write and she will unknowingly show you how deep she is.

A sufferer of Bipolar depression, she had to learn to channel her moods through words and through her work as a freelance massage therapist. “I LOOK AT EVERYTHING IN ART FORM..EVERYTHING..I HAD TO LEARN AT LEAST, BUT THAT’S HOW OR JUST ONE WAY I NOW COPE”.

But writing became her favorite because it allowed her to go to places that she sometimes would never take herself. All these years as she gave therapy to others, along the way she found out that writing was hers. It started to be a relief for her depression, for the tears she could not explain and the love she felt.

One of my favorite pieces she dedicated to her Grandfather’s battle with cancer…

She loves reading and now writing. There was (and still is) so much for her to let go, there were so much emotional doors she felt the need to open, even though some doors remain closed; but poetry became the next best thing.

And then there was the time we collaborated…

Her brain told her that she had to share it with others; because a lot of individuals told her she was strong for surviving all the she had been through. She needed fresh eyes to see {how frail is and} other parts of her personality.
