Welcome to Day 19 of #TheLoveLetterProject Writing Challenge created by Marie of The Notion Of Love! If you’re just joining me, you can catch up on the rules here!

I’ve been working on this piece for over two days now. I wondered if I “overthunk” it and so I kept tabling it but that defeats the purpose of raw writing from the heart. So here it goes

I love being alone. There. I said it. I used to define myself as an extrovert with strong introvert tendencies; but that has changed quite a bit in recent years. I am even more introverted than ever. Although I can trace the origin of my semi reclusiveness; I now prefer it. I’ve fully embraced it. But loneliness? Now that is something different.

I have definitely experienced loneliness before and it was a horrible feeling. For me it was more than just a pity party or “woe is me” moment. It was a foreboding heaviness that occurred during what I thought was an exclusive relationship. I would make efforts to communicate and rebuild after enduring a breach but to no avail. Though sporadic and temporary and experienced after being rejected, the loneliness would honestly cause my broken heart to sink. I went about my daily routine and continued pouring out to others (which I love to do); but wasn’t receiving the support and emotional intimacy I really needed. More than that; from who I expected to receive it from.

I really believe expectations can play a huge role in loneliness. We cannot be disappointed if there are no set expectations but every relationship and interaction has parameters, boundaries and expectations; unspoken or not. And it’s unrealistic to place demands on others unbeknownst to them.

I often use the example of someone who said they’d give you a ride to an appointment. If they say they’ll pick you up at 5pm and get there at 5:30pm you may be upset, worried or even angry. However if they said they’d arrive between 5pm and 5:30pm and pick you up at 5:30pm; they have met your expectations, thus keeping your anxiety, worry and anger at bay.

In the aforementioned example; setting expectations made all the difference. Now this does not excuse the other party from keeping their word but it does help us focus on where the responsibility lies. As it relates to relationships and experiencing loneliness in general, I think it’ll be helpful to honestly assess the following:

  • When and why do you feel lonely?
  • Are you lonely or just bored?
  • Do you find it difficult meeting people with the same interests? And if so, why?
  • Are you lonely due to fear or social awkwardness?
  • If so, what are you doing to work through your shyness or social awkwardness?
  • If experiencing loneliness in your relationships, have you communicated that to the other parties?
  • What kind of relationship do you find most challenging? Personal? Professional? For example seeing platonic relationships through the lens of romance, inadvertently ascribes a role to the other party that they may not be interested in.
  • Are we depending on others for our wholeness and happiness?

I want you to know you are not alone. I say it often because it means that much to me!! As a woman of faith it’s not unusual for people to throw Bible Verses across the room. I’ve hurled them a time or two across the room too so I get it. Guilty as charged. I KNOW God is with me. He said He would never leave me nor forsake me BUT God also created us to need and long for human interactions as well!

Life is not easy and there are some things you can’t tell ANYONE! You can have an incredible support network (like I did and still do) and STILL have moments of loneliness! I thank God that that season is behind me and in all fairness it was mild compared to what others endure, but it has only increased my burden and compassion for others dealing with like matters.

Day 16

To Anyone Who Is Struggling

I really debated on how I was going to handle the letter writing challenge for today. I kinda felt like I’d been repeating myself lately. I’ve been on this mission of really saving lives and raising suicide awareness for the last few years now and sometimes wonder of it gets old.

But then God reminded me, everybody struggling is not suicidal. And everybody struggling is not struggling with the same thing. But we all struggle with something.

So what I chose for this and if necessary the next few prompts during this challenge is to share a vintage piece that prayerfully will speak to where you are on your journey at this time. If not…bookmark it for a friend won’t ‘cha?

The piece I’ve selected is: Guess I Needed That Cry.

Let me hear your voice…💫e

Day 15

To Your My Mother

Dear Mommy,

By far the strongest woman in my life.

I still remember the night you sat my little brother and I down to explain why Daddy wouldn’t be coming home. First and third graders hearing wailing cushioned by the sobs of those surrounding you…surrounding us.

And this time the cruelest of Brooklyn streets were not to blame.

Heart failure bending his 34 year old 6′ 5″ frame.

It was at that moment our lives would never be the same.

Daddy; a true gentleman’s King on earth.

Our loss. They say Heaven’s gain.

I love and respect you so much Mommy.

Your unwavering fortitude and class is why I carry with me every story you’ve told and example you demonstrated before our then impressionable eyes.

I remember you working full time and finishing your college degree full time at night. Though I rehearsed the romantic stories you told of Daddy surprising you on your college campus; as an adult I now understand you put your life on hold for the dreams of others.

I remember you coming home exhausted to two teens blaring music, dishes in the sink and occasionally mediocre grades. I can hear your voice booming from the core of your chest, “If I can work full time, go to school full time and be on the Dean’s List; you have no excuse!! All you have to do is keep your room clean and give me good grades!!”

Mommy you always carried yourself like a such lady. The wisdom that you exercised, positive words and blessings you constantly speak over my life; give me life.

What you’ve sacrificed to give – forever stays with me.

I remember you saying there are things I just won’t understand until I get older or until I’m married or until I have children.

Mommy you were so right.

And I’m so glad God chose you to house our potential.

Thank you Mommy…to infinity.

Day 14

To The Boy Across The Ocean

We

wading

in deep waters

without drowning

I can’t stop

thinking about you

God knows

I wish

I knew how…

Wish I knew how to…

Knew how to breathe underwater

Inhaling our moments

Undisturbed

Uninterrupted

Unquestioned

Rivers promise me tomorrow

And tonight’s moon is ours

Again against every odd

Countless are the hours

We’re swimming while standing

Standing while soaring

Soaring while fully submerged…

Across every ocean

Undeniable motion

Synchronization…shapes our world

Day 13

To The Thunder In Your Veins

Thunder. We hear it but don’t see it right?

Feel it’s roar, vibrato and rumble but can’t trace it?

Knowing it’s there but can’t put a finger on its pulse…

Forced to respect its power though you don’t know when it’s coming so it startles you and forces you to pay attention.

It demands respect.

The thunder in your veins is life itself.

No guarantees with the exception of the guarantee that it’s alive and it will make its presence known.

Remember – we see the light(ning) before we hear the thunder and feel the wind of its effects.

Perhaps that’s what missing from your plans, goals, life focus.

Hence the inability to feel alive and recognize purpose embodied in the thunder in your veins.

Where, who and what is the source of your light? Your joy? Your hope? Your song? Your voice? Your inspiration?

Day 12

To The Girl Still Waiting

I too am waiting

Waiting on prayers prayed

And

Waiting on dreams dreamed

And

Waiting on decreed manifestations

But

Who or what is waiting on me us?

I promise you

If I had waited for everything to be just right

You and I wouldn’t be having this conversation.

As I shared in an earlier piece

GOD CAN…I CAN’T

I remember rehearsing all the reasons why

I could not move forward with my desire and life calling to inspire others

I wanted everything to be perfect.

From eradicating debt to improving my health and physical appearance.

Sure those are things I am still working on

But who needs me NOW?

In this short video clip from a few years ago – I am honest about how worrying about such things is not where my focus should be – ’cause I could miss an opportunity to literally save a life.

Life is too short Beloved!

So today while waiting…

I want you to honestly ask yourself a few questions:

  • Are you waiting or procrastinating?
  • Why are you waiting?
  • Is who/what you’re waiting for worth waiting for?
  • Is it something or someone that has also deemed you worth the wait?

Lord God,

I pray that you would grant the person reading this right now wisdom and discernment. I pray for clarity and wisdom to prevail. May they know their worth and not settle waiting for who or what has already moved on.

Thank you for the gift of grace to wait patiently and honorably. Give us the courage to push past our insecurities so we can bless those waiting on us.

Amen

Day 11

To The Girl Apologizing For Her Beauty

Stop.

There are many things that

one ought apologize for

such as mistakes…

But you are not one of those

You had no control over

your conception or complexion

The curvature of your spine

or strong jaw line

The freckles that give chase

along the softness of your

beautiful face.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I say let them behold God’s goodness

They say beauty is as beauty does

I say do well by remaining humble and kind

Oh and always keep this in mind…

Inner beauty far surpasses outer beauty

E v e r y time.
