Day 10

To That Person Who Has Lost Everything

Humbled that you would share this with me…

I give my ear and hold my peace

For I have time, compassion and no answers

I used to have answers, theories and remedies

And then the pendulum swung my way.

So now my ear awaits

My peace I share

My time is yours

My compassion irrespective

And I can see with my eyes closed

Your sinews restored

Your core strengthened

And

Your comeback…inevitable

To The Dreamer In You

Didn’t mean to wake you but you’re sleep

Ignoring your God given gifts

As though it hurts to breathe

Removing your heart from rejection

Rediscovering your mind post dissection

I still believe in you Dreamer so dream.

What hurt you has to release its grip

Write what destroyed you out the script

Dream ’till you remember your assignment

And your why

Promise me you Dream on purpose

For those who dream in legacies

Never die…

Day 8

To The Girl With The Beautiful Faith

We often overlook the most poignant demonstrations of faith because they are seemingly simple. But it’s childlike faith that begins at conception then bellows the loudest when manifested; no matter the age.

To the mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, siblings, elders, midwives, sisters, friends, classmates, lovers, life givers, caregivers and voices of the village that told the girl with the beautiful faith that being different was her superpower- thank you.

To the girl with the beautiful faith,

Though you may or may not choose to acknowledge a power higher than your determination; you exude a courage that faith cannot deny. Keep walking with your head held high, for you encourage millions that they too can kiss the sky. Thank you.

Day 7

To The One That Got Away

Who are you?

An impostor?

A facade?

A mirage?

You absolutely do not exist.

Because I envision love so differently now.

I don’t chase after it.

I don’t run after it.

I don’t beg for it.

I don’t writhe around in pain because of it.

I don’t dim my shine to fuel it.

I don’t have to die so it can live.

What is mine – wants me.

What is mine – wants to be mine.

And that…that is so beautiful.

And I am deserving of nothing short of delicious.

There was a time I thought of a “you”.

I would’ve written sonnets and soliloquies

as though you existed.

But I honestly cannot see a face.

There is no longing.

No woulda, coulda, shoulda.

No what if.

You’re not invisible

You’re not a ghost.

You could not have possibly gotten away…

For you never belonged here.

Meet one of my best friends; Chaplain of the Church Center for the United Nations in NYC and the first person of African descent to hold the prestigious position, Rev. Dionne Boissière MDiv.

Welcome to Day 6 of #TheLoveLetterProject Writing Challenge created by Marie of The Notion Of Love! If you’re just joining me, you can catch up on the rules here!

Day 6

To The One That Continuously Inspires Me

Funny. Once I narrowed down which of my many inspirations I could feature, I thought writing about Dionne would be super easy! But the more I thought about how much she meant to me, the more my heart and tear ducts filled up!!

Let’s see. Met in High School (of course I couldn’t put my hand on one back in the day pic), so we’ve known each other since we were kids. She’s an only child and my brother is my only sibling, so clinging to each other in sisterhood came easy. She spoke so highly of her childhood friend Tanya (Russell-Chambers) and classmate Cathy Gabriel that my respect level for her increased with every conversation. She was a beautiful, loving, loyal person who constantly remained positive. Not easy for a teenage girl but definitely the makings of a great friend.

We were a grade apart and met through our High School’s Gospel Choir that I directed and then passed the reigns on to her after graduation. Sidebar: She is humble but be clear this Sistah can sing her behind OFF!!! Do you hear me?!

I’d say we know eh…a good 99.5% about each other. Have been there for one another through the brightest of days and darkest of night seasons. Very few know all about you and still love you in a way reminiscent of God’s unconditional love. But if I had to liken a human connection to that kind of love, it would easily be the mutual exchange my sister Dionne and I experience in this fleeting capture called life. If you have this – do not take it for granted. It is RARE.

When I invited her on Season 1 of my Inspiration With E Radio Show – I had to hold back tears thinking about the blessing of her incredible nonjudgmental support, God breathed wisdom and friendship in recent years. And the more I interviewed this modern day Esther and she spoke of matters close to her heart; you could hear sincerity, passion and life experience in every word. From being a woman of faith and a woman of color on the frontlines of Social Justice Theology world issues to helping the local church thrive; you’ll understand why she is one of my favorite human beings. Click here to listen!

But as I sorted through photos for this piece, I realized more than ever that many shared my sentiments about my sister. I literally share her with the world while she is simultaneously holding her own world together. I am one of several closest to her that have experienced liberation and healing at the core; as a result of her willingness and tenacity to do the deeper work in our lives.

Dionne and her gorgeous and incredibly sweet parents. I love them so much. They too share her with the world.

Dionne, my sisterI love you to life. The tears that kiss my fingers as I type today are tears of deep joy, appreciation, gratitude and a full embrace of who you are. Though accolades and earned titles will always precede you, I treasure our homegirl, mask off, unbridled tongue moments that feed us and give us the strength to be the women God has ordained us to be in this hour.

Sharing you with the world not only makes me want to be an even better sister and friend to and for you; it makes me want to continue to be the backbone and resting place that people like you so desperately need. A place where you can just be you. Not a daughter, theologian, preacher, colleague, leader, friend or godmother. A place where Dionne can be built up after shouldering the wounds of wounded. A place where Dionne can be silent after silencing the cries of sufferers. A place where Dionne can be comforted after comforting the sick, shut in, bereaved, counseling people and preaching funerals. A place where Dionne can have oil poured on her in abundance for every drop drained from those who take and take and never give.

Thank you Dionne. Thank you for lending me your strength on the days you were scrambling for yours. Thank you for being brutally honest with me and challenging me and charging me to hold on when fainting. Thank you Dionne. From the bottom of my heart – thank you Champion.

I am GODLY PROUD of you and an honored to cover you in prayer as you pray for others.

So grateful to God to be able to give you your flowers…while you can smell them.

Praying God meets your every unspoken need and that He keeps you safe. I pray he supernaturally provides for you financially, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and heals you physically. I pray you are replenished for everything you incessantly pour out to others. I pray your discernment remains sharp and you continue to grow in grace.

On my everything

Thank you Sister💫e

Day 5

DEAR GIRL WITH THE FAIRY DUST WINGS

Written by Ericka Arthur for Authenticitee Speaks March 5, 2018

I could never relate to you

I didn’t see any fairies growing up

And unlike Tinkerbell I wasn’t born

from a baby’s first laugh and

a white dandelion seed.

I never found that perfect blend of

Easter Sunday pastels and John Robert Powers

NYC taught defensive walking.

Timberlands pounding concrete and a scoliosis infused curve appeal were more my speed.

More my thang. More me. Me.

But angels? Angels I saw everyday.

Angels in the eyes of Grandma Dora.

Angels in every stranger that told the city bus driver to wait for me running down the street or yelled “Back door!!”; causing the drivers to slam on their brakes so I can get off a ridiculously crowded bus.

Angels on the days I didn’t see them

but

like the wind, felt the effects of them.

Never played dressed up in pink or

sheer flowing gowns donning wings.

If anything my Fairy Godmother woulda been the round the way, street smart great Aunt named Miss One.

She was the Magical Number Runner portrayed by the beautiful but totally relatable Thelma Carpenter in The Wiz.

Instead of Lena Horne’s equally beautifully yet stunning, classic, feminine portrayal of Glenda the Good Witch.

But perhaps more than a notion; this is the

modern day affirmation of Girl power.

Recognizing but respecting the unique

sound waves embedded in our wings.

Perhaps what makes real Girl Power

powerful is trusting that your power

like mine

is empowered – by those who believe.

Day 4

TO THE GIRL WITH THE BRUISED HIPS

Written by Ericka Arthur for Authenticitee Speaks

I just know that you were moving. Pace staggered to echo breathing gone erratic. Strong; you were more than folklore. You consisted of manifested dreams and earned stripes amidst kinks in armor. Bows and arrows lauded your every movement until silenced by defeat.

But I see you whole Warrior. Injured but incapable of quitting. So rest if you must. Rest until healing nurtures what neglect mishandled. And this time when you return to war, victory will supersede the peace that deception stole.

According to Wolf Song Alaska:

Keep in mind that a wolf’s real personality is often hidden under the character of his or her social position. Intelligent, non-aggressive, and friendly with the ability to make strong emotional attachments are among those traits we can generalize about the magnificent wolf.

Day 3

Bark And Moans Beneath The Howl

Written by Ericka Arthur for Authenticitee Speaks

Howling they say keeps the pack together and as I say, the enemy at bay. Life as I know it has summoned different parts of my persona in recent years. Some facets I’ve fully accepted while others even I’m still adjusting to. One thing is certain; I’m serious about warring for my family first in every realm and only the discerning that I’ve deemed worthy, are allowed access to the moans beneath the bark.

So to the wolf in my chest? You’re best served and serve best uncaged.

Day 2

DEAR WORLD CHANGER

Written by Ericka Arthur for Authenticitee Speaks March 2, 2018

Foundation shakes

Wheels cart

Mouth closed

Taste savored

Earth trembles

Your imprint

Your power

Your power

My favorite f a v o r

Well connected and perhaps endowed

Our connection would’ve raised eyebrows

Remember the day your palms were sweaty

Your “thank you”, my high

Cue confetti

When your lips mouthed “goodbye”

Felt like blown kisses against my mind

Knees buckle though spine aligned

World Changer of the most regal kind

Sooo…

Since today is also #ThrowbackThursday I decided to share one of my vintage pieces entitled Haunted for Day 1.

HAUNTED

Written by Ericka Arthur – June 2016

There are moments when I’m angry.

Days when I don’t want to speak in code smeared in morse nor shielded by prose.

The air thick with quiet.

Forcing me to relive pain behind doors now closed.

Smothered by every flashback of you not having my back.

Haunted about lies shrouded in wasted times.

Taunted by my high road refusal to drop dimes.

Shamed and gag ordered by my response to pain.

‘Cause now there’s another that can drop my name.
