“Dear Mom,

This is a meal ticket…”

That’s how letters from my little brother would begin when he wrote Mommy during that first and only summer we both went away to camp. Separated for the first time, we were at camps of our own choosing that year; as the Brooklyn Flatbush YMCA Day Camp was our permanent fixture. I loved the Flatbush Y whereas he could take it or leave it.

The staff at his camp “conveniently” scheduled time to write parents and loved ones back just before dinner. Oh not to worry it wasn’t mandatory every day or anything like that. Pretty genius if you ask me. I honestly don’t think we would’ve heard from him, had he not been made to write!

Hmmm…made to write. A scheduled time to write. Now that’s different…at least for me. Whatever have I started here in this space called Authenticitee Speaks? I’m like an incredibly odd blend of eclectic, raw, impulsive sincerity and “nothing a good management team can’t fix”. Writing (publicly) kinda goes from, “Hey look at me, I’m writing!” to “What ‘chu lookin’ at? Can’t you see I’m writing?!” in my best Brooklyn accent of course…Son.

Some call her February…

I chose that title for this piece because I was originally thinking of a unique way to say February 1st. I bore that easily. Yep, I even managed to complicate that right? But then it felt like the name of a novel I should write or the first line of yet another poem. However maybe I’m February or going through a February. See February is also a girl’s name that means “purification” (thank you Google – your work is done here); so perhaps that’s why it was so important to write something today. A day to chronicle just…that.

Purify me oh mighty God above and let this time date stamp before midnight prove a Sista can be consistent!!

No, (sigh) now that doesn’t sound right either. *clears throat* “We won’t be spiritualizing procrastination, uncertainty, being in the middle of major transition, overextending myself with an iota of a new sense of direction”…at least not this time.

This is Day 1. And yes I’ve been here many times before. I’ve had many Day 1s before. Every doggone journal I’ve started; from Noah’s flood to Kendrick Lamar’s kick a•• Grammy performance begins exactly the same. You know how we do. Hit that Dollar Tree Honty and grab another (rolls eyes) marble notebook with a chic cover and begin…again. Be it repentance or reflection we all have habits we want to develop or drop. I wanna get in the habit of writing in this space at least once a week; there, I’ve said it. And as far as I’m concerned, this is yet another brand new Day 1 for me all of us.

Hello. My name is Ericka. I prefer to be called ‘e‘ (lowercase intentional) but some? Some call her February…and that sounds beautiful to me.

Thank you for being here!

Blessings!

When I uploaded my first post on WordPress three years ago today, I had no idea what I was getting into…

I’m certainly grateful for what blogging has taught me and (now) excited (again) about the potential it holds but “for real for real“? I’m still winging it.

See….Authenticitee Speaks has morphed into a public record of my journal, a clear declaration of my allegiance to Jesus who I believe is the Christ, a platform to interview and showcase those who inspire me, words of encouragement and some serious, sho nuff grown folks love poetry. Oh and one mo’ thang Honty – everyone is welcome!! What the what?! What do you do with that kinda gumbo?

Actually – I’m not quite sure. I mean do I have to do something about that? Isn’t that what makes my authenticity speak? Just being me? Heck. Until my friend Quiana Scott; entrepreneur and former blogger of FEMpowered Persepective schooled me, I didn’t even know what a blog was 3 years ago. I even remember my fellow Gates Of Influence powerhouse classmate Latarsha Lytle asking a myriad of questions about “marketing plans for my target audience”. Huh?! Um. The hurting Ma’am. I have a burden for the hurting. That could be anyone! How do you target THAT?

The incessant fixation with stats and likes began to vehemently swirl around my pen but I refused to let it pressure me. I still refuse to let it sway me; whether I’m posting here or on my beloved Instagram page. I just write from my heart and trust that whoever needs to see it, will see it when they need it the most.

Yes; 3 years later I realize I have just as many things to unlearn as I do to learn! But as long as I’m at peace with a piece before sharing it with the masses, while exercising my oft used right to delete or archive it later; I am remaining true to myself. And that is what matters most to me. I’ve wrestled long enough with my range of writing by finishing the sentences of naysayers in my head! I’ve finally accepted that some will only see me as a preacher and others, only as the bass player’s wife. Then there are those who only know me as an Instagram poet or radio host. As a writer, I only have control over what people see, not how they perceive what they see. That revelation is LIBERATION personified!

But the truth is before I was a preacher, a wife, mom and somewhat of a public persona (lest I flatter myself), I was just ‘e‘. I’m most comfortable without the titles. I’m just ‘e’. And as I learn how to walk worthy of my calling, in spite of every embarrassing mistake and poor choice made…

No matter the format, on my word: I’m gonna spend the rest of my life making other people feel less broken. Period. No matter the setting, venue, method, expression or platform – that is the calling on my life. Here’s to hindsight, God breathed insight, being kind to myself and future happenings!

If you have any questions/comments, feel free to share below! Take a moment to introduce yourself! Special shout out to my Mom who reads every word and listens to every radio broadcast I’m on! Thank you Mommy! I love you to life!!

GOD CAN…I CAN’T

When I first launched “Inspiration with E” I was surrounded by people who only knew one fragment of my mosaic. They either saw me as ONLY a love poet @authenticiteespeaks, or ONLY a blogger at http://www.authenticiteespeaks.com or ONLY a mother or ONLY a singer/songwriter/speaker. A few still ONLY see me as the bass player’s wife. Wondering how I pulled the Worship Pastor’s youngest son or how he pulled the Grad student from Brooklyn. I have had MORE than my share of those who ONLY try to get close to me because of the artists my husband works with. Caught off guard by my down to earth-ness & even turned off when I don’t name drop or “take advantage” of connections. In my mind, they’re great people who I admire/respect but they’re HIS coworkers…not mine. They too, deserve people in their lives who don’t want anything from them. Imagine that.

.

.
Then there came @grindhardradio. “What? My own radio show? Nah. Not ready”. I wanted everything to be just right. I used to be smaller. Had a perfect smile. Skin was clearer and life hadn’t beaten the freakin’ hell outta me yet. I didn’t want to be in debt. I didn’t want to be overweight. I didn’t want to have a shattered heart in recovery & a brain with glitches. I didn’t want trust issues. I didn’t want health problems that interrupted my life. How could I inspire people when I STILL need inspiration?!

.

.

And then GOD began to encourage me to encourage others…right from where I was. ALL PEOPLE. To share what makes me smile, gives me hope, and breathes LIFE into me.

.

.
Yes. I’m glad you’re here. Nope. I don’t have all the answers but GOD can handle your questions. I say WE encourage as many people as possible and remind them that they matter too. No NOT RELIGION OR JUDGMENT. Just good old fashioned LOVE💫e
PS: It can still be a good day!

I AM STILL NOT READY TO WRITE ABOUT YOU JAY…

Nor am I ready to delete your last voicemail message…nope, not ready. Not ready because I only save the messages I want to remember forever. Things I want to remember forever…just like you.

So what have I been up to since we last spoke? Hmm let’s see…trying not to dart in and out of traffic on this untethered road called Transition….

God. Has this really been sitting in my drafts for two months now? I had it all ready to go along with screenshots of the last time you left a voicemail. Huh? I know, I know Jay…I just couldn’t concentrate man. Enough about me. Why are you gone?

What?! Omgoodness put that down!!  LOL! Whateva man I don’t know why I saved these screenshots of your last email and last voicemail; with a red arrow pointing at your name?! Like Really?!

img_6034

Looking back on it now it seems pretty over the top and obnoxious. Like I had to prove to the nosy and the noisy that what we had was real…pure…and consistent. Damn it Jay I miss you and this ish HURTS!!! I don’t know. Maybe I feel guilty about the High School Reunion Gospel Choir Recording idea you had worked so hard on, never coming to fruition. You mentioned it every single time we corresponded or spoke. But I was always lacking the time and/or resources to make the trip back home to Brooklyn; or in your latter years, to Maryland or New Jersey. Then after doing much research you said, “No worries, there’s a special mic everyone can purchase, record their own vocals, email me the files and I’ll mix the project that way!” You were such a genius. A witty, kind and hilarious genius. My homeboy. God, I miss you so.

Maybe its not guilt, maybe its anger or even regret. It can’t be sadness though right? Nah because we’re not allowed to feel that and if we do; only but for a moment, right? Well whatever it is, I feel it all because I still can’t write about you Jay. God knows I have been trying. ‘Cause that’s what we do right? Us, creatives like you and I…me and you. Yeah we create the pain away. Throw it into heart wrenching poetry, passionate lyrics and music. Lots of music.

I remember when you started blogging in this very community. The SoundSuite Studio blog was a true reflection of your heart’s desire to help others enhance their studio experience. We miss you in this space too.

Jay, can we overspiritualize procrastination? ‘Cause I would hate to think that was a factor or even the reason, so much of what I intended to say before now remained in cluttered and fragmented thoughts that never even made it to the Drafts section.

Well that’s it for now. Besides my Mommy, you’re still the only one that calls me by my Rap name. I’d give anything to hear it now…considering I’m still not ready to write about you Jay. I love you. Save a spot in the choir stand for me up there, ok?

Peace,

e
